Hello all,
I hope your week was fantastic. We had a pretty busy week over here in Cambridge. Also, My year mark was on Thursday. It's amazing to reflect on the last year. I'm so grateful for every moment I've spent out here (even the bad ones because they just turn into funny stories). We also had a miracle with another guy just showing up at church. Blessings.
Anyway, we got a phone call this week and I was asked to play the piano at a funeral. It was all good, except the service was entirely in Portugese. At one point, they announced that I was going to play after a speaker. Not understanding anything besides my name, I just started getting up to play. One guy who spoke Portugese and English came and explained to me what was going on. So, I just sat at the piano during the eulogy, then I played. It all worked out:) We got some good Cape Verdian food out of it, too.
This week is General Conference. I love hearing the inspiring messages of the modern-day prophets and church leaders. Sometimes I think, we feel burdened down because their words ask much of us. They are however, intended to increase our faith and raise our vision. I found a quote in the Cambridge Common a few days ago. (I'll also attach the picture.) Speaking of the troops gathered from the various colonies by the Continental Congress for the defense of all the colonies, George Washington said the following:
"They are now the Troops of the UNITED PROVINCES of North America; and it is hoped that all Distinctions of Colonies will be laid aside; so that one and the same Spirit may animate the whole, and the only Contest be, who shall render, on this great and trying occasion, the most essential service to the Great and common cause in which we are all engaged."
On the mission, I've found that we work better together when we have an attitude of serving on the same team. As a companionship puts all their efforts into the common cause of salvation, miracles occur. I know the same is with conference. As our only goal is to follow Jesus Christ, we'll come to see that the words spoken will get us there. They are not trying to burden us with more to worry about. They are seeking to help draw closer to God, and find peace and happiness in ways that they know work. When we work together to come to God, we'll see that were successful.
Love you all,
Elder Rogers
